MILITARY RIDGE TRAIL - WISCONSIN: The Military Ridge Trail is a 41 mile recreational trail built on an old railroad bed that runs from Verona Wisconsin West to Dodgeville, WI. Trail offers biking, hiking, running, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and skiing through scenic country side. The trail from Verona to Riley, Klevenville, Mount Horeb, Blue Mounds, Barneveld, Ridgeway, and Dodgeville in Iowa and Dane Counties, Wisconsin. It connects near to the Madison trail system via the Capital Springs trail access to the Milwaukee area. The trail brought lead from Dodgeville and Blue Mounds for shot for the Army in the early 1800’s. Farming became more important in the 1830’s and 1840’s. The Chicago and Tomah Railroad first to consider a railroad along the Military Ridge. It was bought by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, operated a narrow-gauge line in southwestern Wisconsin. In 1880, communities along the line invested, and construction brought a boom to communities along the line. The Department of Natural Resources established the 23.5 mile Military Ridge State Park Trail between Mount Horeb and Dodgeville and to Fitchburg in 1983. The trail links to the City of Madison’s 100 miles of marked bicycle routes linking the University of Wisconsin, state capitol and parks along Lakes Mendota, Monona, and Wingra. In Verona is the East end of trail. This is about six miles North of the Cameo Rose. Parjk your car at a Highways Business 18/151 and PB is a 100-car parking lot. In Riley visit The Riley Tavern. In Klevenville there is a prairie remnant that extends for about 60 yards on both sides of the trail just east of Klevenville. For birders there are Killdeer, flickers, red-tailed hawks, and bobolinks in the area. Mount Horeb has a shelter. Blue Mounds has a community park on the west edge of the village, along with Blue Mounds State Park and Brigham County Park At Barneveld, the village maintains the Birch Lake Park northwest of the village on County T for picnicking, camping, boating, and fishing. Ridgeway offers public restrooms, and water fountains at the city park. Dodgeville at Highway 23 is the West end of the trail with a parking lot.
